Ringworm on cats

Ringworm is a form of skin disease that is very common in dogs and cats. Although the name makes you think otherwise, this skin disease is not caused by any type of worm. This is actually caused by a fungus known as Dermatophytes which eats dead tissue found on the surface of the skin, spreading it around animal skin.

In cats, there is a certain type of fungus known as M Canis which is found with almost 95% of all cases of ringworm. Usually, cats will get ringworm from contaminated objects such as beds, scissors, or other animals that already have the disease. If there are animals in your house or around your house that have ringworm, your cat can be easily infected this way.

If you have kittens or cats under one year old in your home, you should always use precautions, because they are more prone to ringworm. Kittens can easily contract this disease, especially if you let them go outside. They can easily come in contact with contaminated objects or other cats suffering from the disease. Kittens need a long time to build up their immune system, and in the meantime they are more likely to develop common diseases such as ringworm.

The most common symptom of ringworm in cats is rough or broken hair, or hair loss around the head or claws. Ringworm can be easily identified by scaly patches of skin on the body that look itchy and inflamed. There will also be damaged hair around the scaly patches of skin. This area is very sensitive, and never touch it, because it will hurt your cat.

If you see any of the above symptoms with your pet, you should immediately schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. If your vet diagnoses your cat with ringworm, he or she may prescribe an ointment or tablet. What he describes, will determine how serious the ringworm is. If he prescribes a tablet for your cat, you must feed it with food. Ointments on the other hand, usually spread into the coat, topically. You should always use what your veterinarian prescribes every day, to make sure your cat is cured. The healing process will take time, usually around six weeks or more.

Cats suffering from ringworm should be labeled an infection. If you have children at home, you must keep them away from your pets. Every time you hold your cat, you must always wear gloves. Ringworm is contagious, and you should always be careful. Even though this is a mild illness, ringworm can cause serious problems due to slow recovery time and the fact that it is contagious.
